THE UPTON & URBAN GREENS
PROVIDENCE, RI
A vacant brownfield site that once housed a commercial laundry facility is a model urban infill development anchored by a community grocery store that will has filled a void in the local neighborhood for healthy food options.
The grocery store, called Urban Greens, is a community Co-op that has attracted over 2,000 members to date. In addition the project included 30 new mixed income apartments on the site over podium parking garage. The residential units are a mix of Low Income units (20%) with the balance set aside for Workforce housing serving tenants with incomes of 100%-120% of Area Median income. The building features a ‘double stud wall’ construction and high performance heat pump systems which drastically improve the energy efficiency and tenant operating costs over the long term. The project also features a 90 KW solar array interconnected between the roof of the grocery store and the Upton apartment building. The project won an AIA Honor award in 2020. |
